Your guide to TOPIK
The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is the official test that assesses your level of Korean if you are not a native speaker. It measures your listening, reading and writing skills. It's a great way to see how much you know, set yourself a clear goal and, if you're interested in studying or working in Korea, open many doors.
It is divided into two blocks:
- TOPIK I - Levels 1 and 2 (basic)
- TOPIK II - Levels 3 to 6 (intermediate and advanced)
How long does the certificate last?
TOPIK certification is valid for 2 years, and you can download your results report from the official website.
What levels can I reach?
Are you wondering which TOPIK level corresponds to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) levels? This is a detailed comparison based on the official CEFR descriptors and the competences assessed in TOPIK. This equivalence is indicative. TOPIK specifically assesses Korean, whereas CEFR is a general framework for all European languages. There is no direct official equivalence, but this table may help you to get an idea.
Level 1 - Survive (A1)
You can recognise and use simple sentences on personal and everyday topics. You can greet people, shop, order food. Similar to A1 level A1 use of basic structures and understanding of simple sentences.
Level 2 - Lectures (A2)
Can communicate in simple, everyday tasks (telephone, shopping, errands), distinguish formal/informal. Matches A2 in ability to manage routines and immediate needs.
Level 3 - Conectas (B1)
You can manage in public contexts, maintain social relations, understand general topics. Comparable to B1 in terms of travel, work and leisure, and expressing simple ideas.
Level 4 - Comprendes (B2)
You can understand news, articles and social/abstract topics with fluency. Equivalent to B2 in comprehension of complex texts, discussions, and clear expression on a variety of subjects.
Level 5 - Outstanding (C1)
You use Korean for work or research, deal with complex topics, choose the right register. Matches C1 in fluency, accuracy and ability to communicate in professional settings.
Level 6 - Proficient (C1-C2)
You use Korean with near-native accuracy in professional environments. Fits C2 in terms of comprehension and almost effortless production, and C1 in control of registers, nuances and complex structures.
